What Is EPF?
The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Every month you contribute 12% of your basic pay plus dearness allowance, and your employer contributes another 12% - but part of the employer's share goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) instead of your EPF account. This calculator projects your EPF balance at retirement.
How to Use It
- Enter your monthly basic pay plus DA and your current age.
- Enter your retirement age (58 is standard) and any existing EPF balance.
- Enter the salary increase you expect each year and the EPF interest rate.
- Optionally add a voluntary contribution (VPF) on top of the 12%.
Example
A 25-year-old with a basic pay of ₹25,000, a 5% yearly raise and the current EPF rate of 8.25% could have about ₹1.77 crore at 58. Of that, ₹28.8 lakh is their own contributions, ₹23.9 lakh comes from the employer and about ₹1.24 crore is interest - compounding does most of the work.
Where the Employer's 12% Goes
Of the employer's 12%, 8.33% of pay up to ₹15,000 (at most ₹1,250 a month) goes to the pension scheme, and the rest goes to your EPF. With a ₹25,000 basic, your employer pays ₹3,000: ₹1,250 to EPS and about ₹1,750 to EPF. The calculator includes only the EPF part, because EPS pays a pension rather than a lump sum.
Interest Rate
EPFO declared 8.25% for FY 2025-26, the same rate as the two years before. The rate is set every year, so the projection is an estimate.
Limitations
The calculator assumes no withdrawals or job gaps and a steady salary increase. Employers that contribute on the full basic for EPS, the tax on interest for very high contributions and EPS pension amounts are not included.
