What Is PPF?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a 15-year government savings scheme in India. The interest and the maturity amount are tax-free, deposits qualify for the Section 80C deduction under the old regime, and the interest rate is set by the government every quarter. This calculator shows your maturity value and a year-by-year table at the current rate, for 15 years or with 5-year extensions.
How to Use It
- Enter how much you will deposit each year - between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000.
- Keep the current rate of 7.1% or enter another to test a scenario.
- Choose 15 years or an extension of 5, 10 or 15 more years.
Example
Depositing ₹1,00,000 every year for 15 years at 7.1% gives a maturity value of about ₹27,12,139. You deposit ₹15,00,000 and earn ₹12,12,139 of tax-free interest. Extending the account for 5 more years with the same deposit takes it well past ₹40 lakh.
Rules Worth Knowing
- Interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, and credited once a year - so deposit before the 5th.
- The account matures after 15 full financial years and can be extended in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits.
- Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year, and loans against the balance from the 3rd to 6th year.
Current Rate
PPF earns 7.1% for October to December 2026; the rate has not changed for several quarters. The government reviews it every quarter, so check the latest rate before planning.
Limitations
The calculator assumes one deposit at the start of each year and a fixed rate for the whole period. Monthly deposits made after the 5th earn slightly less. For salaried retirement savings, see the EPF Calculator and NPS Calculator.
