Compress PDF

Reduce PDF file size in your browser. Light mode keeps text sharp; strong modes turn pages into images for much smaller scanned files.

Choose a PDF and a compression level; the new size is shown with the download.

Medium and Strong turn each page into an image: the result looks the same but text can no longer be selected or searched.

How PDF Compression Works Here

Government, job and college portals often accept PDFs only below a limit such as 200 KB, 500 KB or 2 MB. This tool offers three levels, and shows the old and new size as soon as it finishes:

  • Light rewrites the file with a compact structure. Text stays selectable and nothing is lost, but the saving is usually small.
  • Medium turns each page into a 150 DPI JPEG image. Scanned documents often shrink a lot and still print well.
  • Strong uses 100 DPI images for the smallest file, fine for reading on screen.

How to Use It

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick a compression level and click Compress PDF.
  3. Check the size shown. If it is still too big, try a stronger level; if text looks soft, use a lighter one.

Getting Under an Upload Limit

  • Scans and phone photos are where most of the weight is, so Medium or Strong usually helps the most.
  • Remove pages the portal does not need with Delete PDF Pages before compressing.
  • If you are starting from photos, keep them small before building the PDF with JPG to PDF.
  • More tips, and fixes for common portal errors, are in our guide to reducing PDF size for online forms.

Limitations

Medium and Strong replace each page with a picture, so text can no longer be selected, searched or copied, and links stop working - keep the original for editing. A PDF that is already mostly text may get no smaller, and Light mode cannot shrink images. The tool cannot promise an exact target size such as 100 KB; it shows you the result so you can choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Try Medium first, then Strong if it is still too big. If that is not enough, delete pages the portal does not need. Scanned documents usually compress well; text-only PDFs are often already small.

Medium and Strong turn each page into an image, which is what makes them so effective on scans. Use Light to keep text selectable, and keep your original file for editing.

A PDF that is mostly text is already compact, and Light mode cannot shrink images. If Medium is larger than the original, the file was already well optimised - keep the original.

Yes. Compression runs entirely in your browser and the file is never uploaded, which makes it a safer choice for ID proofs and financial documents than upload-based sites.
