Slug Generator

Turn titles into clean, SEO-friendly URL slugs - lowercase, hyphenated, with accents converted and optional stop-word removal.

Type a title - or one per line - and get a clean slug ready for your URL.

0 = no limit. Cuts at a word boundary.

Changing the slug of a page that is already live breaks old links, so add a 301 redirect from the old URL.

What Is a Slug?

A slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as how-to-check-ssl-certificate in example.com/blog/how-to-check-ssl-certificate. A good slug is short, lowercase, uses hyphens between words and contains only letters and digits that work in every browser. This tool turns any title into one.

Why Slugs Matter

  • Readers see the slug in search results and when a link is shared, so it tells them what the page is about.
  • A clean slug avoids percent-encoded characters such as %C3%A9 that look broken when copied.
  • Google recommends simple, descriptive URLs that use words rather than ID numbers.

How to Use It

  1. Type a title, or paste several titles, one per line.
  2. Choose the separator and a maximum length.
  3. Tick Remove stop words to drop words such as a, the and in.
  4. Copy the slug.

Example

With stop words removed, 10 Best Cafés in São Paulo (2026 Guide) becomes 10-best-cafes-sao-paulo-2026-guide - the accents are converted to plain letters and the brackets disappear - and What's New in Laravel 12? A Complete Overview becomes whats-new-laravel-12-complete-overview, with the apostrophe removed rather than turned into a hyphen.

Hyphens or Underscores?

Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, while an underscore joins them, so word-counter reads as two words and word_counter as one. Underscores and dots are offered for file names and identifiers.

Limitations

With ASCII only ticked, letters from scripts such as Hindi, Arabic or Chinese are removed, because they have no plain-Latin form; untick it to keep them as they are. The tool does not check whether a slug is already used on your site. If you change the slug of a published page, add a 301 redirect from the old URL. To encode a full URL, use the URL Encoder / Decoder.

Frequently Asked Questions

A good slug is short, lowercase, describes the page in a few words and uses hyphens between words. Avoid dates and numbers that may become outdated unless they are part of the topic.

Often, yes. Dropping words such as a, the and of makes slugs shorter and easier to read. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning, such as in a title like "To Be or Not to Be".

Use hyphens. Google recommends them and treats a hyphen as a separator between words, while words joined by underscores may be read as one word.

With ASCII only ticked, accents are removed, so é becomes e and ß becomes ss. Untick it to keep letters such as é or Hindi characters, which browsers show correctly but encode when copied.
